A garage bedroom needs an approved sleeping-room design, not simply a bed in a finished room. Review emergency escape and rescue, everyday access, floor-to-opening height, room dimensions, heating, ventilation, alarms and any garage bay that remains. Select windows or exterior doors after the applicable requirements are established, and verify the exact product's usable opening before ordering.

Why does sleeping use change the design conversation?
Tell the designer and permitting authority that the room will be used for sleeping, including occasional guest use. An office plan and a bedroom plan should not be treated as interchangeable labels. The review must reflect the intended room and the final configuration of the house.
The International Code Council's explanation of 2018 IRC Section R310 identifies emergency escape and rescue openings as a safeguard for sleeping rooms when the normal exit path is blocked. What measurements matter for an escape opening?
Measure the actual unobstructed opening produced by normal operation, not the rough framing hole, glass area or nominal window size. Ask the supplier for the exact unit's clear-opening information and compare it with the locally approved requirements.
Andersen summarizes common IRC criteria as 5.7 square feet of net clear area, a grade-floor exception of 5 square feet, minimum clear width of 20 inches, minimum clear height of 24 inches and a maximum 44-inch sill height measured from the finished floor. It expressly directs readers to local requirements. These are reference criteria, not a determination that a particular garage qualifies for an exception or passes local review. The common arithmetic trap is multiplying the minimum width by the minimum height and assuming the result satisfies the separate area requirement:
20 × 24 ÷ 144 = 3.33 square feet.
That is less than both 5 and 5.7 square feet. Width, height and area must all be evaluated. A hypothetical clear opening of 30 by 28 inches has 5.83 square feet of area; that calculation alone says nothing about its operation, installed height, exterior conditions, approval or the product actually supplied.
How can the floor design change the window decision?
The finished floor is the reference point, so coordinate the window with the entire floor assembly. Measure the current slab, planned finish and bottom of the actual clear opening on one section. If a proposed raised floor changes, update that relationship and recheck the rest of the room's height and thresholds.
For example, a purely illustrative 47-inch slab-to-opening distance would become 43 inches above a floor raised by 4 inches. That arithmetic does not establish an approved solution: the raised floor also affects headroom, doors, moisture treatment and the route through the room. Mark exterior grade at the opening as well. An opening near a driveway, retaining wall, deck or fence requires a review of what is outside it. A photograph from inside the room cannot prove that the escape-and-rescue arrangement works.
Can a retained garage door open directly into the bedroom?
A direct doorway between a working garage and a sleeping room is a serious layout issue to resolve before pricing. ICC's published interpretation of the 2015 IRC reproduces R302.5.1's prohibition on a private-garage opening directly into a room used for sleeping. Use that as a model-code warning, then have the designer verify the adopted local provision for the project. ICC: garage opening and penetration interpretation.
Do not assume a heavier door, extra insulation or a “guest room” label solves that configuration. The plan may need a different circulation arrangement. The entire retained-garage boundary also needs coordinated fire, air and penetration details; these are related but separate functions.

A closet may be a useful storage choice, but it is not a substitute for this review and should not be used as the sole test for whether a room is an approved bedroom. Nor should a listing description be treated as proof of a permit's scope.
What should you retain at closeout?
Keep approved plans, any revisions, inspection results, the exact installed window or door information and final documentation required for this project. Walk through opening operation with the installer. Check that furniture, blinds and storage do not obstruct the arrangement shown on the approved plan.
